A: Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) is a networking standard that includes routing information in the packets of an IP network. Telstra's MPLS core is used to ensure that all packets in a particular flow take the same route over a backbone. MPLS can deliver the quality of service required to support high-bandwidth applications such as voice and video as well as service level agreements that guarantee bandwidth.

Q: Why is IP important to my business?
A: IP provides the platform that enables you to re-think the way you do things. Most importantly, it allows you to interact with your customers how they want. IP technology lets customers pay bills and make credit card transactions online. Gone are the days where the only option was providing payment over the counter.
IP helps your business evolve and create opportunities through new business models.

Q: What is the difference between a private and public IP network?
A: The internet is a public IP network that is ideal for conducting low-impact, non-critical transactions and data transfer. The shared internet environment is accessible and ready to go, however there are drawbacks for business. You don't get the guaranteed reliability and security of a fully managed solution, and there is no support when something goes wrong.
In contrast, a private IP network is a more robust managed solution that is scalable and fully supported with performance agreements. A virtual private network (VPN) uses Telstra's national intelligent network to combine all your company's communications between customers, sites and mobile staff.
It provides all the benefits of a private company network without the cost.

Q: What additional services can Telstra provide across an IP network?
A: At a base level, Telstra can manage your whole network infrastructure from routers to performance management staff. You can run the infrastructure yourself or have us manage some components for you; it's entirely your choice.
In addition, we can add a whole range of services and applications:

Q: Is voice over IP the same as IP telephony?
A: Voice over IP (VoIP) is really a subset of IP telephony. It is about making a telephone call over an IP data network as opposed to a standard circuit. The real challenges with VoIP occur when people are not at their PCs or phones to answer phone calls, using directories and managing access.
IP telephony takes the voice experience a step further by integrating new, intelligent applications that seriously change the way we do things. For example, clicking on an email from your PC may prompt your phone to ring – you pick it up and speak directly to the sender.
