The productivity advantage

The fourth annual Telstra Productivity Indicator (TPI) reports on productivity improvement in Australia’s large enterprises and across a range of government organisations. Global economic uncertainty has added considerable strain to organisations, operating in an already challenging domestic business environment. Nevertheless, a group of organisations has maintained their focus on improving productivity with the aim of achieving competitive advantage and success.

As with TPI 2011, the 2012 report focuses on organisations, which we identify as ‘Productivity Leaders’ (Leaders) – those organisations that use Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or other metrics to measure productivity, and report significant productivity gains in the last 12 months. Comparisons are made with ‘Productivity Followers’ (Followers) – those organisations that do not have KPIs or other means of quantifying productivity and did not report significant productivity gains in the last 12 months. By highlighting the characteristics of Leaders, in comparison to Followers, the findings can assist in providing a roadmap to help organisations achieve productivity improvements and competitive advantage.
