Overview

Wireless LAN can be used to extend an existing wired LAN or as an alternative to a fixed-line network. It is ideal where extensive cabling is not possible or when you need a simple network solution for large, open-space work areas. It can also support roamin and guest access as well as IP Voice. The simplicity and flexibility of our Wireless LAN delivers tangible business improvements across industries such as manufacturing, retail, logistics, hospitality, education and mining.

We offer a complete Wireless LAN service from design, procurement and installation through to a range of management options*. We also recommend an optional site survey to ensure high performance and cost-effective deployment. Our end-to-end solution could improve business outcomes, and give you the confidence of having a proven solution with highly professional management from one contact point.

Benefits

Help improve productivity

Wireless LAN can connect your staff to your local area network wherever they may be in your workplace for real-time access to business-critical applications. What’s more, extra flexibility to move around can enhance work continuity and productivity.

Help minimise business risk

Choose the management option that suits your risk profile for each site and connection. We offer agreed service levels within our management options that can be tailored to meet your requirements, plus we can recommend and implement network configuration and dimensioning. We also provide trouble-free access to thoroughly tested devices and advanced functions. In addition, by engaging us for a site survey, the subsequent design and implementation can help reduce the risk of radio interference or connectivity problems.

Help improve financial outcomes

Wireless LAN provides a cost-effective option for campuses and large work environments where fixed-line LANs are not practical. It does not require expensive cabling, nor does it require extra LAN ports to cater for visitors or additional employees. In addition, our Wireless LAN site survey can provide a design that delivers high-quality connectivity to avoid the cost of redesign and deployment.

Simple and scalable

Wireless LAN offers a simple and highly reliable connection for multi-functional work environments such as offices, accommodation, recreation, factory and outdoor workplaces. It is also ideal for locations where cabling is intrusive such as heritage buildings. In addition, Wireless LAN is easily scalable allowing you to add or remove functions and coverage to adapt quickly to changing needs.

Focus on business

With our Proactive Management option, we provide expert resources both in our Operations Centre and on site to manage your daily operations so you can allocate IT staff to more important tasks. You’ll also have the simplicity and convenience of a single point of contact.

Features

You can choose to have us design, deploy and manage the Wireless LAN solution as an extension of your Managed Router solution, or choose to purchase only the hardware and maintenance and install the devices yourself. Our Wireless LAN installation and commissioning service is provided by certified professionals and incorporates audited devices and testing. We also deliver a final report detailing your network presence location both physically and logically in radio frequency coverage areas.

Wireless LAN offers two modes of implementation:

Autonomous mode: Autonomous mode supports stand-alone Access Points (APs) for Wireless LAN where each AP acts independently of the other to provide client connectivity and security. Connectivity is lost if the device moves too far away from the Wireless LAN unit, so roaming is not possible. This mode suits smaller, closed environments such as small offices, temporary rooms and conference rooms. The autonomous Wireless LAN mode supports Telstra approved Cisco® and Juniper equipment.

Unified mode: Unified mode uses a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) to act as a central point for client connectivity and security. It provides the ‘intelligence’ to aggregate and coordinate multiple APs for Wireless LAN. The mode provides full business functionality including guest access and continuous connectivity for roaming across the total Wireless LAN network. It is suitable for both internal and outdoor deployments, especially industries that have multi-functional environments such as office, accommodation, recreation, factory and outdoor areas. Unified mode technology is Cisco based and incorporates QoS, guest access, and is used for Mesh Wireless LAN solutions.

WLAN Site Survey

The Wireless LAN Site Survey is a critical component of any Wireless LAN solution. Although optional, we strongly recommend it for optimal LAN performance and cost-effective deployment, especially for large and complex environments. The Site Survey assesses your environment to determine appropriate locations for APs for Wireless LAN, to help minimise interference and maximise coverage. We deliver a Site Survey Report with physical site information and survey results including: coverage maps and interference sources, recommendations on access point location, antenna type and orientation for optimal coverage and performance, the recommended frequency/channel plan and the bill of materials.

Flexible management tiers

Available under proactive or reactive management tiers, each with inbuilt flexibility that lets you customise the management level¹ according to the individual site. You can also mix and match tiers according to site need.

Reactive Management: The Reactive Management service tier is a cost-effective solution for smaller, non-critical sites. With this tier, equipment management is performed solely on a reactive basis. You must contact the Service Desk when you detect a fault since we don’t proactively poll the routers. For an additional fee, you can choose to have commissioning and maintenance on either a repair or replacement basis.

Proactive Management: The Proactive Management service tier will suit you if you don’t have in-house management expertise or have sites where business continuity is essential. This tier provides comprehensive management including proactive monitoring and alarming of equipment, response, diagnosis and repair. Configuration file assurance is provided by daily back-ups.

Things you need to know
