Indigenous Australia
We recognise the important role telecommunications can play in achieving educational, health and economic outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
Our strategy focuses on the unique opportunities we can provide as Australia’s largest telecommunications company.
National Indigenous Directorate
The National Indigenous Directorate was established in 2005 to work with governments and stakeholder groups to coordinate improvements to telecommunication services for remote Indigenous communities across Australia.
Logistical, cultural and social factors affect the provision and take-up of basic telephone services to more than 1,200 remote Indigenous communities throughout Australia. In many remote areas there is little or no existing network infrastructure.
Telstra's Indigenous Directorate and our dedicated products and services seek to address the challenges faced by remote Indigenous communities. The end goal is to deliver solutions that make a difference and benefit Indigenous people and their endeavours.
Our Reconciliation Action Plan
Our Reconciliation Action Plan (PDF 3.2MB) outlines our commitment to creating opportunities for Indigenous Australians with strategies for our customers, communities and people.
- Our customers – provide affordable, innovative and accessible products and services that address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities to increase digital inclusion.
- Our communities – use our technology, people and resources to support and create opportunities for Indigenous Australians that celebrate and sustain Indigenous culture.
- Our people – improve Telstra’s attraction, recruitment, engagement and retention of Indigenous employees as a means of economic empowerment.
We monitor the impact of the actions outlined in our Plan and report to Telstra's Diversity Council, on a quarterly basis. We also work with Reconciliation Australia to monitor and refresh this Plan.
Local community involvement
We actively participate and get involved in supporting local communities right across Australia.
Through our Payroll Giving charity partners and Telstra Foundation-funded community organisations, we provide volunteering and fundraising opportunities for our people.
Providing our employees with opportunities to engage with the community helps make Telstra an attractive place to work, enhances our reputation and strengthens the communities in which we operate.

Other ways we give
The Telstra Foundation delivers Telstra's corporate philanthropy program. Its mission is to make a positive and lasting difference to the lives of children and young people.
An employee directed giving program that provides grants of $1,200 to local community organisations that involve the participation of a child or young person directly related to permanent Telstra employees.
Telecross is a volunteer service coordinated by the Australian Red Cross that provides the elderly and housebound with a reassuring daily phone call to ensure that they are safe and well.
