Telstra has invested more than $23 million to improve Next G™ mobile coverage on many of the nation's highways, meaning many summer travellers will have access to wireless coverage on their travels, including wireless broadband, for the first time.

In October this year, Telstra announced Next G™ network coverage was available in all areas with published CDMA network coverage and now with over two million square kilometres of coverage is vastly superior to all other 3G mobile networks in Australia. This includes almost 80 highway locations, including the Bruce, Calder, Cunningham, Flinders, Great Eastern, Great Western, Hume, Midland, New England, Pacific, Princes, South Gippsland, Warrego and Western Highways.

Telstra's Wireless Executive Director, Mr Mike Wright, said the world class Next G™ network continues to expand with more base stations adding breadth and depth of coverage in areas that provide customer and commercial benefits.

Highway sites that have been completed in response to customer and business feedback in the past six months include:

  • Nonda, Queensland; Flinders Highway in far North Queensland
  • Coorong, South Australia; Princes Highway, Melbourne to Adelaide
  • Bellmount Forest, New South Wales; Hume Highway; also provides coverage to the Gunning township
  • Mangalore, Tasmania; Midlands Highway between Hobart and Launceston
  • Yarragon South, Victoria; Princes Highway between Melbourne and Sydney; also provides coverage to the Willow Grove and Thorpedale townships
  • Northam, Western Australia; Great Eastern Highway and the Northam bypass

"We expect to make ongoing investments in highway coverage, which is great news for transport companies, essential services and tourists travelling around Australia, as well as for communities living along these major roads and highways."

"The planned closure of the CDMA network in January 2008 means we will have one national mobile network to support and it already covers more than 98.9 per cent of the population," Mr Wright said.

Telstra has been getting on with the job and investing in the nation's communication infrastructure.

Telstra's Next G™ network offers advanced mobile content and applications such as video calling, BigPond® TV, 33 channels on Mobile FOXTEL from Telstra, Sensis® search services, plus the latest news, weather and sports reports.
