Telstra fibre project win
Telstra's delivery of high-speed broadband to remote communities has been recognised, winning at an Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG) gala awards event last night. This is the sixth award for the Arnhem Land fibre project.
Telstra's Broadbanding the Top End Project (Phase 2) won the ATUG 2010 Excellence Award for 'Best Communication Initiative Regional'.
The $34 million project, which received funding from the Northern Territory Government and Rio Tinto Alcan and valuable support from the Northern Land Council, connects nine Indigenous communities and the township of Nhulunbuy to Telstra's fibre optic backbone.
"This project has been innovative and collaborative in a number of ways, from the multi-party partnership with government, business and traditional owners via the Northern Land Council, through to the way the project was managed and the positive outcomes for all concerned," John Gibbs, head of Telstra Network Construction said.
The work completed in Arnhem Land provides real opportunities for significant improvements in health and education outcomes, along with improved access to entertainment options.
Small businesses operating in this remote part of Australia can also benefit with the ability to download large files and access materials needed to do business in regional areas.
"Network technologies have an extraordinary power to drive innovation and business opportunities in regional and remote areas, but it is the people who see and act on the possibilities, who make it happen for communities such those in Arnhem Land.
"This win is well-deserved industry recognition for all involved," Mr Gibbs said.
The project has been previously been recognised by industry bodies, winning a prestigious international award at the World Communications Awards and a variety of national and state awards for project management excellence.
