Media Release

As many as one in three Australian small business owners are considering buying an iPad or similar tablet in the lead up to Christmas according to the latest research conducted for Telstra.

Telstra Business says its latest research of owners of small to medium businesses (SMBs) shows 28 percent say they will be buying a tablet for work, even though only nine per cent are using them now.

For those businesses already using mobile broadband, 66 per cent have a tablet on their Christmas wish list.

Telstra Business Group Managing Director Will Irving said tablets are proving popular in the SMB market with 86 per cent of users saying they are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the devices.

“Smartphones and high-speed mobile broadband have been great business enablers and tablets help the move to increased mobility,” Mr Irving said.

“Telstra expects they will top the Christmas wish list for many this year – for small business, they really appeal because they’re simple to use and they help make work even easier on the go,” he said.

“And our surveys show Australian small businesses increasingly wanted to be more flexible in their work.

“More than 60 percent have at least one staff member spending most of their time working away from their main business location,” Mr Irving said.

“Three-quarters of Australian SMEs are equipping staff with laptops, and more than half are now supplying smartphones for work purposes, rather than ordinary mobile phones.

“Notably, for businesses that encourage staff to work away from the office, 89 per cent say tablets make their work moderately to significantly more efficient.”

Telstra recently introduced the popular Apple iPad 2 to its range of tablets making it easy for businesses to buy an iPad on a plan with a generous monthly data allowance and spread the device costs over 24 months.

Telstra Business customers can also choose from two popular Android-powered tablets – the Motorola XOOM™ and the Acer Iconia Tab A501 Pro. Both make it easy to share content with clients, speed up ordering and logistics when on the road and access email and office documents without the need for a bulky laptop.

About the research

The Telstra SMB survey was carried out from 11th to 20th October 2011 by StollzNow Research and included owners of 321 businesses from self-employed to 200 staff. This sample size gives a confidence level of ± 6% at the 95% confidence level. Field methodology was a permission-based online panel. Quotas were set for State / Territory and region within each State / Territory so that the combined total produces a representative sample that can be projected to the full population of businesses in this category.
