The Australian Government established The Do Not Call Register in response to increasing community concern about the growth in unsolicited telemarketing calls. It contains a database of telephone numbers where individuals can expressly indicate in the form of a registration that they do not wish to receive unsolicited telemarketing calls. You can register your phone number on the Do Not Call Register website to help prevent unsolicited telemarketing calls being made to your household. Fax numbers, emergency service numbers and numbers used or maintained exclusively for use by a government body can also be registered.
Some organisations considered to be operating in the public interest are exempt from the Do Not Call Register. Examples of these include government bodies, registered political parties, MPs, political candidates, religious organisations, charities and educational organisations.

How to register
There are three ways to register telephone numbers on the Do Not Call Register. These include:

About registering your phone number
Australian telephone numbers used primarily for private and domestic purposes are eligible for registration on the Do Not Call Register. These include fixed (or landline) numbers, mobile phone numbers, satellite numbers and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) numbers.
Registration is free and will last for five years at which point the individual will need to re-register their number in order for it to stay listed on the Do Not Call Register.
Registrations can also be removed at any time by individuals on the Do Not Call Register.
What does this mean for my relationship with Telstra?
Companies are permitted to call numbers on the Register where they have consent to do so. Consent may be express or may be inferred from an existing business relationship (unless the person has opted out of their telemarketing).
