Electromagnetic Energy (EME) is present everywhere in our environment, but is invisible to the naked eye. The earth and the sun are natural sources of EME. Human-made sources of EME include that generated by Radio Frequency (RF) technologies such as TV and radio broadcast antennas, microwave ovens, baby monitors and radio communication systems including cordless phones and mobile phones and their base stations. In short, EME is part of our everyday life.
Telstra understands that some people are concerned about the possible health effects of electromagnetic energy from mobiles. We take these concerns seriously and are committed to monitoring EME research closely and acting responsibly.
Firstly, we comply with the Standards laid down by the Australian Communications Authority (ACA), which regulates the safety of the telecommunications industry in Australia. This safety standard is based on careful analysis of scientific literature and is designed to offer protection against the identified health effects of EME and includes a large in-built safety margin.
Secondly, our entire mobile and other radio communications infrastructure is designed and managed responsibly to minimise impact on the community. Our field staff are also trained in all aspects of EME safety.
Thirdly, we regularly support independent research into the effects of EME on health. We monitor international research developments and provide assistance to other research institutions studying the effects of EME.
Telstra relies on the expert advice of internationally recognised health authorities such as the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) - an agency of the Commonwealth Department of Health - and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to assess possible impacts on safety and health. These organisations routinely review the science relevant to the EME generated by radio communications services.
The weight of national and international scientific opinion is that there is no substantiated evidence of adverse health effects from the EME generated by radio communications services.
